Choral Groups, Performers and Educators
Children and Youth Choirs
Students in choir develop music-reading skills and singing technique through rehearsal and performance. Choral music offers an opportunity for artistic expression, the joy of working collaboratively with others, and an avenue for developing self-confidence. And besides that, it's fun!
The Port Townsend Youth Chorus is accepting new members of all ages. Director Leslie Lewis welcomes singers to join in the new season. Rehearsals start mid-September for elementary, middle and high school aged choirs. Each choir rehearses once per week after school to prepare for concert appearances throughout the season. Students learn basic vocal technique, musicianship, sight-reading, performance etiquette, and sing choral music of all styles and eras. Please call 379-0223 or email

Chamber Music
The Chamber Music Society of Port Townsend was created in the summer of 2008 by a group of friends who are chamber music fans and who wanted to be able to appreciate Chamber Music more from right here at home. In talking with the board members from the Youth Music Fund (a concert presenter), the decision was made to merge efforts under the Chamber Music Society banner. The YMF History of awarding youth music scholarships will continue as a goal of the new organization and end -of-year funds as possible, will be designated to this worthy purpose. It is the intention of the Society to expand these concerts in future years, growing in both number of events and size of audience. The Society will continue to build a sustaining fund through annual memberships and contributions which will insure future and continuing success. Our Mission is to organize and present an annual series of concerts which feature accomplished performers from across the United States. The Society is led by a Board of Directors and devotees of chamber Music who volunteer their time in support of the Society's programming. Contact: Leah Hammer

Extras
Port Townsend has some great talent in bow making for violins, cello and violas. Check it out in the April 2004 issue of Smithsonian Magazine. Says author Russ Rymer in his article "The Music Tree": "Port Townsend, Washington, a seaside town on the Olympic Peninsula, has by happenstance become (along with nearby islands) the home of Charles Espey, Paul Siefried, Ole Kanestrom, Chris English, Morgan Anderson, Peg Baumgartel, Robert Morrow and enough other legends and strivers in the trade to make it the undisputed center of American bow manufacture."
